The Wombat Says: If, like this wombat, you like your slots sprinkled with a little bit of magic and mystery then Microgaming’s Winning Wizards might just get your cauldron to bubble. This magical-themed slot takes a leaf out of the well-loved world of wizarding to take its player to a realm where spells and sorcery are the name of the game. It’s of a similar era to the Mad Hatters slot machine– a bright, fun, classic game.
Will this furry critter going be put under a charming spell by Winning Wizards? Or thrown into the witching hour of horror by this slot? I dusted off my wand and spell book to take a further peek. Abracadabra!
Look and Feel
This slot’s graphics have a classic feel about them; bright and colourful like the Free Spin City slot, but with a cartoony look. This isn’t the newest of slot games and so it doesn’t go for the showy graphics that many players have become used to, it offers the player simpler fare. The background of the slot is a simple black back drop, the icons loom pretty large in the wooden frame which hosts those spelling-binding reels.
I have to admit that this Wombat wasn’t a fan of the soundtrack of the game and we played with the sound turned off. When you spin the reels there’s a whooshing sound of a spell being cast, but there are some classic tones when the slots stop. The jingles when you make a winning combination are pretty gratifying, so that noise is a wizard winner.
Winning Wizards has 5 reels, 3 rows and 5 pay-lines, quite a few less than other games like the Pollen Nation slot AND it’s a low volatility game. The high value icons on your reels are those spell-binding accessories that every wizard about town has: the magic man himself; a grinning wizard with a mysterious (or scary) look in his eye, a flashing crystal topped staff of power (or wand to us humble Wombats), a powerful spell book, a mystical potion bottle, and a sparkling ruby ring. The lower value icons are made up of the golden-scrolled K, Q, J and 10 of the card deck.
If you can magic the wizard of the title onto 5x of the reels there is a rather nice payout to play for- now that’s a touch of magic right there!
This is a game comes without any gimmicks, as the slot is all about the base game alone. There are no bonus features or Wilds to distract you from the main event; which is spinning those magical reels!
Winning Wizards is a straightforward slot without those extra features that we all take for granted these days. Instead this is that rare variety of game that sticks to the classic style fruity of yesteryear and does it pretty convincingly.
If you like the magical genre just like we do here at Wombat Towers, then Winning Wizards is an enjoyable slot with an arcade feel which is nothing more than a good bit of fun. If you’re into more sophisticated games with multiple opportunities to take it to another level, impressive bonus games and 3D graphics, then maybe this game might not work its magic for you.
