The wombat says: Ahhhh so much sushi! That Japanese delicacy seems to be quite a common theme in Slotland nowadays and this Microgaming release is named after the green fiery paste that sushi fans seem to like so much.
To be honest, this wombat’s not really a fan of wasabi, it tickles and burns the nostrils (and I don’t know if you noticed, but I do have very big nose holes it’s a marsupial thing…). I once ate a teaspoon’s worth for a bet. That didn’t end well, I can tell you, I ended up looking like something out of Monster Mania. Shudder.
That said, we DO like all things Japanese here at Wombat Towers so we’re more than happy to try this Eastern-themed slot out…
Wasabi San is a five reel slot with 3 rows and 15 paylines – quite a few less than other games like the Great Griffin slot machine, and the reels are set on a solid bamboo frame – the graphics are nice enough with bright colours and a distinctly Japanese theme. Your symbols on the fishy reels include; 5 different sushi symbols including sashimi, nigiri and California rolls (sorry, but we’re not sure which is which), a Japanese chap in a traditional hat, a zen-looking woman and a beautiful bonsai tree. Then there’s the moustachioed sushi chef who does a cool little dance with his knives when he lands on a pay-line, a poisonous but friendly yellow puffer fish and a green Wasabi logo. This game is brighter than the Dolphin Quest slot, and that’s saying something (they like sushi too by the way).
The sushi the chef acts as the Wild in the game, and will substitute for all other symbols on the reels to make up your winning combos, except for the yellow puffer fish and the Wasabi logo – both of which trigger off the slot’s fun extra bonus features.
Wasabi-San Free Spins
Land 3x or more of the green Wasabi logo symbols anywhere on the reels and you’ll trigger the spicy spins! Here you’ll be given 10 free goes with ALL your wins tripled thanks to a x3 multiplier. It is also possible to re trigger this feature Wombat Fans by landing another 3x or more of the Wasabi Scatters… Perhaps we are getting to like this wasabi stuff after all!
Fish Market Bonus Feature
There is also another Pick Em type bonus in this slot, and you can set the little beauty off by landing 3x or more of the yellow puffer fish on any pay-line. When you do, the yellow fish will swell up to fill each position like balloons… Once the bonus has been triggered, you’ll be taken to a second screen, here players must pick 3 of the gruesome comedy looking fish from the smiling Fish Market stall holder’s icy shelf. Each one will be worth a coin value from as little as 36 coins, up to a ruddy great big jackpot of 2,500! Not bad going at all.
Overall this is a fun slot with good graphics Wombat Fans. The theme, animations and sound effects makes the game a great package, and we enjoyed the extra features, too. But the payouts in the base game are a bit on the low side, and could really do with being a bit more lucrative… Still, it’s very much worth a spin. Chopsticks at the ready!
Wombat score: 4/5
Fishy fun from Microgaming!
