The wombat says: We’ve come across many a slot inspired by tales of exotic travels and intrepid adventure, and those game-making wizards at Microgaming are tapping right into our sense of adventure with this release set in the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu. This slot designer makes all sorts of games from roulette to blackjack to Microgaming Jacks or Better, but with Kathmandu they are firmly in the slots zone.
The opening sequence shows a flight path over the Himalayan Mountains that got us itching to pack up our backpacks! After all, the temples and mountains of Nepal have been attracting travelers for years Wombat Fans.
Grab your mossie nets, it’s time to take a trip to Kathmandu.
Look and Feel
Plush temples and beautiful mountains are all present and correct on the reels, but sadly, the 2D graphics are not groundbreaking. We do like the soundtrack to the Free Spins round though – there’s a whole load of very frantic trumpets!
This slot has 5 reels, 3 rows and 9 pay lines – somewhat lower than the like of the Halloween Horrors slot with its 35 lines. We’d mark this slot down as a medium variance game.
Your symbols on the reels depict scenes from city life and include; a temple, an ancient bell tower, a bejewelled elephant, a load of exotic fruit and an old map as your high value symbols. The standard playing cards; 10, J, Q, K & A also appear on the reels all done up Nepalese style, and represent your lower value symbols in the game. The temple symbol will give you the best chance at a jackpot, as 5x of them in a row will give you a chunky payout of 750 coins! That’s as chunky as the Extra Cash slot machine– and that’s got 50 pay-lines.
The prayer wheel is the Wild symbol in Kathmandu slot, and spins when it substitutes for all symbols on the reels (other than the Scatter) in your winning combos. Meanwhile, the Buddhist Bell acts as the Scatter symbol. Land 2x or more of the Scatter symbols anywhere on the reels and you’ll scoop a Scatter payout – the maximum of which is for 5 bell symbols that gives you 100 coins.
Katmandu Free Spins
But that’s not all! Land 3x or more of Bell Scatter symbols, and you’ll set off the Free Spins round – which means you’ll get 15 Free Spins and a random multiplier added on to it (of up to 5x)! Mighty generous indeed.
During the Free Spins round you’ll also receive another extra Wild on your reels in the shape of the Temple, and you can also re-trigger the Free Spins (which this wombat managed to do) by landing more Scatters. This means a possible 30 extra goes for you…
Feeling lucky? Then it’s time to gamble! Click on the Gamble icon below the reels. Now guess the right suit and/or colour of a face-down card after a win to double or quadruple your prize. But beware! A wrong guess will lose you the whole lot. Good luck!
Kathmandu slot is perfect for a bit of low-variance fun. With only 9 pay lines in play and just the one bonus round, making the big wins isn’t going to be easy, but with a potential multiplier of 5x, the Free Spins round can be pretty lucrative. Dig out your Lonely Planet Wombat Fans, Nepal here we come!
