Haven’t I already reviewed the Thunderstruck slot? Ah yes, but that’s because we have 2 games with Thor and Co. here at Wombat Casino. This is the original game. The Thunderstruck II slot came later as it’s name suggests. (I thought I was having a senior wombat moment there).
This first slot now looks quite retro as you would expect, but then again, I enjoy playing these classic games – the Cashanova slot is another example, another excellent game. If you like a clean and uncomplicated life, it’s right on the money. And it’s got those pleasing fruit machine like sound effects when you spin the reels (and what appears to be a jazz drummer doing his thing in the background, or are those Nordic war drums?)
This is a 9 line game. You can select between 1 and 5 coins per line and the coins range from a penny to $/€/£1, so the maximum bet is $/€/£45. Old school! Yeah!
Thor is the Wild symbol in this game (in the sequel it’s the Thunderstruck II logo). He looks like he’s been going to the same gym as the guy in our Gladiator Slot. And if he helps to make up wins across any of your activated pay-lines, the win is doubled and he will stand in for everything apart from the scatters- pretty standard stuff- as we said earlier, this is a no frills game that is easy peasy to pick up. The Thor on this game has a more substantial beard than the wispy Fu Manchu effort that features in the sequel. We’re just saying.
You can win some pretty tidy sums with the wilds. 5 Thor symbols on an activated pay-line will pay out 10,000x your line bet. We like!
In this original Thunderstruck slot, the scatter symbols are the Rams rather than Thor’s hammer which is the highest paying symbol after the wilds. You’ll need at least 3 to trigger the free bonus round which will give you 15 free spins. All wins are tripled during free spins.
And the best bet? You can re-trigger them. Always our favourite feature! All you need to do is get 3 more rams in the free spins and you’ll have 15 more free spins. Boom! Plus you’ll win an initial amount for getting the rams in the first place. 2 rams wins you 2x your total bet (but you don’t get into the free spins), 3 rams wins you 5x, 4 rams 20x and 5 rams is the big one- you win 500x your total bet (plus you head into free spins). When 2 or more ram symbols land, they get struck by lightning and the machine pays out and hopefully puts you into the free spins round.
After a win, you can opt to gamble again if you like. It’s a simple color or suit pick on a card draw. Guess the right colour to double your win, guess the right suit to quadruple it. There is a chart showing you the previous card draws.
The rest of the symbols are made up of other Viking like symbols, such as Thor’s horn, his hammer (Mjölnir), a drinking horn and Útgarða castle, plus some lightning (Thor is the God of Thunder after all) plus the usual playing card symbols : ace though to 9.
It’s all loosely based on the Norse legends I guess. Thor once tried to down all the contents of a drinking horn before he realised it was connected to the sea and his hammer Mjölnir was a pretty handy weapon (it could level mountains) and was forged by 2 dwarves: Sindri and Brokkr.
And the scatter rams? Aha! Microgaming (for it is they that designed the slot in ancient times) have made a mistake here. I am a pretty knowledgeable wombat, especially when it comes to Norse mythology (I once starred on Mastermind: specialist subjects Norse gods) and I can reveal that Thor’s chariot was in fact pulled by 2 old goats called Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr- let’s just call them Billy and Willy as the old Norse is pretty hard to pronounce.
The ram thing with the golden fleece was happening further south in sunnier climes.
The Thunderstruck slot has an expert mode as well- which is designed for those players that like to auto-spin. You can choose between 5 and 10 spins.
Mobile Thunderstruck Slot
Thunderstruck has been souped up for mobiles and tablets too. There is a slight difference to the desktop game, in that you cannot select pay-lines or your coin size, you just select your total bet and the game is set at the maximum 9 pay-lines. We prefer that to be honest.
A classic game that continues to be popular with players, like the original Tomb Raider slot machine. It’s got some big pay-out potential, it’s easy to play and it works well on mobiles and tablets. In short, it does what it says on the can!
Wombat Score: 4/5
We are going to smash our hammer down on the table and award this classic 4 points. It’s a classic. What can we say?
