The wombat says: Fancy a trip to Tibet’s high plains? Yes please! Although, it’s ruddy cold up there. That’s where we’re headed Wombat fans in the Golden Yak slot from Lightning Box games. Rumour has it this game is a high variance cracker so we thought it was best to check it out for ourselves.
For those of you that don’t know your zoology, Yak’s are most famous for their long shaggy coats. But they also have massive horns and milk that makes the local delicacy, Yak butter. I’ll stick to Vegemite thanks mate…
Let’s play. It’s time to hit the Yakpot! (Sorry, this wombat can’t resist a good pun…)
Look and Feel
Snow-topped mountains (the Himalayas most likely) and a sunset make up the backdrop to this animal-themed slot along with a lurid purple background. Squint and you’ll also see there are a few yurts dotted about and some Yaks having a graze.
The sound effects here are the standard ‘kerching’ of wins and a chirpy ditty you’ll probably recognise from previous slots. The design does the job here, but won’t win any prizes when you compare it to games like Wheel of Wishes from Alchemy and Microgaming. But let´s look at the game-play, because that´s where Lighting Box normally comes out smelling of roses.
Golden Yak is a 5-reel, 4-row slot with 1024 ways to win. There are no pay-lines on offer here, instead you’ll make wins by matching 3x or more symbols from left-to-right. Simple.
Your icons on the reels are made up of wild horses, some kind of big cat (maybe snow leopards – eek!) eagles, and some reindeer. You’ll also find a local fella on the reels too – he’s wearing what looks like a hat made from a yak. Your lower value symbols are made up of the 10, J, Q & K playing cards.
The wild symbol is the Golden Yak himself. His Royal Shagginess will substitute for all other symbols on the reels to make extra winning combos for you. This oversized hairy cow has a different role in the Free Spins. But more on later…
Last but not least, the Tibetan temple icon is the Scatter symbol in Golden Yak slot and the key to the Free Spins.
Free Spins and Bonus Features
Land 3x Scatter symbols Wombat fans and you’ll trigger off the Free Spins feature. Now it’s 7 extra goes for you. It’s not easy but it can be done.
During this round, each Golden Yak Wild symbol that lands on the reels comes with a multiplier of up to 10x – which is very exciting indeed. And if you get lucky enough to land 2 Wild multipliers of x10 on the reels the you could boost your bank balance by a hefty 100x your original bet on a single spin!
Has anyone got any smelling salts?
Overall, Golden Yak slot is a decent game, but things really get going in the Free Spins round with those level up multipliers. This wombat feels that the graphics are bit on the budget side (especially for a newer slot), but if you scoop that ‘yakpot’ you won’t much care about that, will you? Nope.
Get spinning – but be careful of that Yak’s horns, they’re sharp as hell.
