The wombat says: Imagine, if you will, a slot that actual looks nothing like a slot. That has no reels, no Scatter symbols and no Free Spins bonuses. Like more traditional games like the Xmas Cash slot, we mean. Well such a thing does exist wombat fans, in the form of the Crystal Rift slot from Microgaming and Rabcat. Let’s take a look at this anomalous little release, shall we? Our paws are simply tingling in anticipation.
Look and Feel
Rabcat are known for making impressive looking slots like Moby Dick, and Crystal Rift is an absolute stunner! This is about as far away as you can get from a traditional 3 reel fruitie like the Vegas Diamonds slot as you can get.
Set in the depths of a dark and slightly spooky cave, this slot is all about crystals. Now, if you didn’t get your GCSE in chemistry (unlike this Wombat who scooped an A), you wont know that crystals form in nature when liquids like magma cool and start to harden.
As such, the backdrop to the game is sci-fi looking crystal mine complete with floating shimmering crystals and shafts of sunlight peaking through. As for sound effects, it’s all ethereal synthesisers and reminds this wombat of Jean Michel Jarre…
The Crystal Rift slot has no reels or rows, but it does have 25 pay-lines justl like that game with our Mexican Fighting Friends- the Lucha Legends slot from Microgaming (that’s a looker too).
Bets start at 25p and go up to £50 per spin.
On the reels you’ll find 8 different coloured crystal symbols and they range in value from the lowest to the highest in the following order; pink, dark blue, brown, light blue, amber, red, green and orange.
The most lucrative in the slot is the orange rock which pays 40x your bet if you land 5 in a row on a pay-line.
The white crystal will act as the wild symbol in this slot. It will do the usual job of substituting for all other symbols on the reels to make up extra winning combos for you.
After every winning spin, you’ll be award a bonus fall – this feature was made popular by Gonzo’s Quest – and sees all the winning symbols are exploded and a new set dropped in to occupy the spaces. These cascading or avalanche symbols will just keep on going until no more continue winning combos land.
Free Spins and Bonus Features
As we mentioned, there are no real bonus features on offer in the Crystal Rift slot. But you do have the Wild Grids Feature…
At the beginning of each spin, one Wild Grid is chosen at random the choice of Basic, Super, Mega and Insane (for more info look at the pay table). The feature is then triggered after 3 successive Bonus Falls and all the symbols situated within the Wild Grid will transform into wilds for the next Bonus Fall that follows. This means extra wilds very often, and if you manage to land an Insane Wild Grid you could end up with 8 wilds on your reels…
Crystal Rift looks very nice and the game play is quite hypnotic. Plus, we really didn’t miss having a Free Spins bonus! But we would say that the size of some of the base game wins are on the small side. Sad face.
Worth a spin to see what the fuss is all about, but perhaps one more for the high stakes players.
