Unfortunately, we no longer offer Babushkas as a real play game at Wombat Casino. Have you tried the Turning Totems game from Thunderkick?
The wombat says: ‘Babooshka Babooshka Babooshka aii yaaaaiii’.
Ah Kate Bush, that wild-eyed warbler.
This wombat always loved a bit of Kate Bush and those all-in-one leotards.
Oh right. This game isn’t an homage to the 1980 pop classic. It’s actually a crazy online slot machine featuring Russian dolls that pop out of their wooden homes to become smaller and smaller, while you get a chance at bigger and bigger wins. This is a beautifully designed game from the guys and girls over at Thunderkick- the people behind the 1429 Uncharted Seas slot. They make some real eye candy! If you think that looks good, check out the Fruit Warp slot– these are not designers that rest on their laurels.
All set on a knitted jumper background. Right then, that’s completely normal…
Look and Feel
The Babushkas slot game is inspired by famous Russian dolls that decrease in size and are placed one inside another. Usually the outer layer is a woman dressed in traditional Russian peasant costume, and while the figures inside can be male or female, the smallest, innermost doll is usually a baby. These weird little things are famous for their intricate hand-painting and usually take on a theme from fairy-tale characters to ex-Soviet leaders. It’s the craziest thing we’ve seen since the Esqueleto Explosivo slot. Well, maybe Mexican exploding skeletons is a little crazier.
But now to the game. Our Babushka dolls spin on what looks like a cosy pastel-coloured sweater, and include babies with dummies in their mouths, and other dolls that blink and wobble from side to side as you play the game. The reels are transparent making the game perfect for playing on mobile, and the slot also features traditional Russian music that speeds up like crazy each time you land a winning combo.
Babushkas is a 17-payline slot from Thunderkick Games. The biggest dolls are the lowest paying symbols, whilst the smaller the dolls are, the higher their pay-out value. Green is lowest and Yellow is highest. The aim of this Russian-themed slot is to fill the whole screen with the top-value symbol, which is the Yellow doll. ‘So how d’you do that, then? Hang on, and I’ll explain.
When you land a winning combo, any neighbouring symbols on the reels that are worth 1 value lower, get upgraded to the next level – making new wins! Your payout is then made, and the process continues until no more upgrades or new paylines are generated. Make sense? Just give it a whirl.
Wild Eggs and Bear Bonuses
The Wild in the Babushkas slot is the Egg and will land on the middle reel during game play. As usual, it substitutes for all other symbols, but don’t be fooled, it’s no ordinary Wild. If the Wild Egg symbol appears with a star on it, it may randomly turn into a bear. Yes, that’s right, a big old bear. This bear will activate one of the following features:
Scare Bear Bonus The Scare Bear bonus comes in 3 sizes. A small bear will upgrade the largest and lowest paying symbol on the reels to the next level up. The medium bear will do the same, but it will upgrade it by 2 levels, and the biggest bear will repeat the process but by 3 levels.
Charm Bear Bonus This grizzly little fella will upgrade ALL symbols on the reels up one level.
Dance Bear Bonus The Dance bear hands out 7 Free Spins, and will add a new Wild on the middle reel on every spin. This means you can trigger any of the Bear Bonus Features on each go. Yeaaahhh!
Here’s an ingenious little extra if ever we’ve see one. If you fill the entire screen with the same Doll symbol, you’ll set off the Wipe Feature which will upgrade all your symbols one level. If the symbols on your screen are already the highest-paying Yellow Dolls, then the reels transform into ghost symbols which will pay out 100x your original bet. Phew!
This is one of those slots thsat look great on a mobile. Just swipe up to get into full screen mode, crank up the volume and spin those crazy babuskas!
In this wombat’s humble opinion, Babushkas is one crazy-ass slot. We love its quirky theme, catchy balalaika soundtrack and weird Wild exploding Egg Bears. Ok, so the gameplay is a bit tricky, but it sounds more complicated than it is. Get spinning and you’ll soon work out what’s going on.
