The wombat says: Ever been to Rome Wombat fans? It’s a busy place I’ll tell you that and slap bang right in the middle of the city is where you’ll find The Colosseum.
Built by Vespasian and completed by Titus during the year 70-80 A.D, this ancient amphitheatre saw gladiators fight each other to the death and public executions amongst other things.
Naturally those slot wizards at NextGen (the guys and girls behind the Emerald Isle slot machine) have decided to theme a game that is all about this bloody thirsty arena – and the result is Call of the Colosseum slot.
Your reels are framed by an ornate Roman background complete with pillars, columns and elaborate architraves. The graphics are well-designed even if they’re not exactly 3D sharp, and we like the realistic Roman animations. Plus we love the soundtrack to the Free Spins that transports you straight to the ancient arena!
Call of the Colosseum Game Play
Call Of The Colosseum slot has 5 reels, 3 rows and 25 pay-lines- less than Robin Hood Prince of Tweets, but pretty extensive all the same. The game has an Ancient Roman theme so the symbols on the reels include the Emperor (we’re not sure which one, mind), a weathered gladiator shield, a bunch of grapes, the sultry empress, a vicious-looking tiger, the Colosseum itself, a load of chariots, and a helmet.
Back in Roman times The Emperor just has to move his thumb upwards or downwards to signify life or death for the participants in the Colosseum so it makes sense that this important fella is the Wild symbol used in the game. He’ll substitute for all the symbols except the scatter symbol, and takes part in the Free Spins, too. More on that below…
Scatters and Free Spins
The gladiator’s shield is the Scatter in Call of the Colosseum slot. Land 3x or more of these on your reels and you’ll set off the Free Spins bonus. At this point you will be given 10 free spins, with a 2x multiplier in play at the same time.
What will the fate of the gladiator be? The emperor will revel all! During the Free Spins round, the emperor symbol will land on your reels giving you the thumbs up or thumbs down gesture with his hand. If you get a thumbs up then you are awarded up to another 3 free spins, but thumbs down = no extra spins for you. A nice extra touch that keeps those Free Spins coming!
If you’re feeling very lucky (and the emperor is on your side), simply click on the ‘Gamble’ button after any winning spin. You can double or quadruple your win by correctly guessing the colour or suit of the face-down playing card. Get it wrong though and your cash prize is wiped out and the gamble game is over.
Unlike this wombat, you might never have wanted to pull on your gladiator sandals and battle to the death with the crowd cheering you on. Which is quite sensible really. Still, even if certain death isn’t your thing, this Roman-themed slot is worth a spin. It might lack some of the flash features you’ll find in rival slots, but it makes up for it with the lucrative Free Spins – we managed to get a whopping 25! So it’s a thumbs up from us.
